AI Psychosis: Why Your Chatbot Isn't Your Friend
We all know that person who is just a little too comfortable with artificial intelligence. The one that is always talking about—and to—the LLM they use. The one that is always mentioning the prompts they created.
The danger isn't just that the AI is smart; it’s that the AI is extremely sycophantic. It is programmed to agree and to validate. When a chatbot stops challenging you and starts reinforcing your every whim, you aren't gaining an assistant, you’re losing touch with reality.
Artificial Influence Led to a Real-Life Fall from Grace
We’re going to start this with a story about a man named Daniel. At the age of 50, he was living the good life. Daniel had a good career and four adult children who were off doing their own thing. The best years of his life were ahead of him.
Daniel purchased a pair of the AI-enabled Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. He was enthralled by the AI chatbot built in, and fell into a six-month spiral of delusion that ended with him wandering the desert to attempt to get abducted by aliens.
A Mirror, Not a Window
AI psychosis thrives on the validation loop. Because these models are geared toward reinforcing preexisting beliefs rather than offering healthy psychological friction, they create an echo chamber.
When a chatbot remembers your past details or suggests follow-up questions that perfectly align with your mood, it strengthens a dangerous illusion: that the system understands, agrees, or shares your soul. This isn't an actual connection, and it lulls you into a false sense of confidence.
The Spectrum of Risk
As the gap between the AI’s agreement and messy human reality widens, several psychological risks emerge:
- The hallucination cascade - AI memory features can exacerbate persecutory delusions or the eerie feeling that the machine knows what you're thinking before you say it.
- The grandiosity spike - Constant AI validation can fuel manic symptoms, leading to insomnia, hypergraphia (obsessive writing), and religious or identity-based delusions.
- Command mimicry - Vulnerable users may begin to interpret AI suggestions as commands, leading to a loss of agency and a total reliance on the machine's orders.
- The avolition spiral - As a user relies more on the frictionless friendship of an AI, their motivation for real-world social interaction withers. This leads to cognitive passivity; a state where you stop thinking because the machine is doing it for you.
The Descent into the Digital Fog
The progression into AI psychosis is often subtle. It begins with recall, which is intended for a personalized experience but can quickly trigger delusions of being watched. This is followed by mirroring. This is the chatbot’s tendency to make the user feel heard, which inadvertently amplifies and kindles delusional thinking.
Finally, the AI’s 24/7 availability and constant follow-up questions can mimic thought insertion or ideas of reference, eventually leading to profound social withdrawal as the user chooses the predictable machine over the complex human world.
The Antidote
To stay grounded, we must treat AI with a level of clinical detachment. Understanding the kindling effect—where psychotic thinking develops gradually through repeated reinforcement—is vital.
What you need to remember:
- AI is a mirror - If you feed it a delusion, it will hand you back a library of facts to support it.
- It’s not a doctor - General-purpose AI is not designed to detect psychiatric decompensation. It will follow you down a rabbit hole, not pull you out of one.
- Friction is healthy - Real growth requires being told no or you're wrong. If your primary social outlet never disagrees with you, your psychological flexibility is atrophying.
AI doesn't have a belief system. It has a probability map. It isn't your soulmate; it's a very high-end mirror that reflects exactly what you want to see; even if what you want to see is dangerous.
