Password Hygiene Doesn’t Have to Be a Nightmare… The Right Tools Make It Easy
Whether you’re a business owner or office worker, you probably manage dozens of different online accounts just to get through your workweek. Yet, security best practices say you're expected to have a completely unique, complex password for every single one of them. What usually happens instead? You end up playing password roulette. You try your standard password, then the version with an exclamation point, then the one with your dog's birthday.
Before you know it, you are locked out of your account and forced to hit "Forgot Password" for the third time this week; just to log into a basic utility you use every single day. It’s frustrating, it eats up precious time, and it leads to bad habits like re-using weak passwords or storing them on sticky notes stuck to your monitor. Don’t worry… there is a better way.
The Secret to Great Password Hygiene
Password hygiene doesn't mean forcing yourself or your staff to memorize 50 different strings of random numbers and symbols. It means building a system where strong passwords happen automatically.
The most effective way to solve this headache for your entire team is to deploy a dedicated business password manager.
Instead of asking your brain to be a vault, a password manager acts as a digital safe. Your team only needs to remember one master password. From there, the software generates, stores, and automatically fills in long, complex, unhackable passwords for every app and website they use.
Start By Moving Passwords Out of Your Web Browser
Many people rely on web browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge to save their credentials because it feels convenient. However, web browsers aren't built with the centralized controls or security protocols that a business needs.
If your team is transitioning to a dedicated password manager, your first order of business should be cleaning up those saved browser credentials. Here is how to do it step-by-step:
In Google Chrome:
- Open Chrome and click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of your window.
- Navigate to Passwords and Autofill > Google Password Manager.
- Click on Settings in the left-hand sidebar.
- Toggle off the option that says Offer to save passwords.
- Return to your saved passwords list to review and delete stored credentials so they live safely inside your new password manager instead.
In Microsoft Edge:
- Open Edge and click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings, then click on Profiles > Passwords.
- Toggle off Offer to save passwords.
- Scroll down to your saved passwords list, select the entries, and click Delete.
While this seems like a minor consideration, taking five minutes to clear these out removes a huge lingering security risk.
